There could be a lot of reasons for this to happen, but the six reasons below cover most of the cases:
- Your configuration may be at fault
- The "Autofill" permission may not be enabled
- A "long press" may be needed
- Your phone may require an additional permission
- If the problem is on Chrome, you may need to reboot your phone
- Some apps don't allow the feature
Your configuration may be at fault
This Privowny Autofill for Android is only available for users with Android Oreo 8.0 and higher, and requires Privowny App v1.32. If your configuration is different, then refer to the article "Android 7.0 and below - Use the Smartfield Icon to generate and retrieve credentials".
The "Autofill" permission may not be enabled
For the Privowny Autofill to work properly it needs to be enabled in the settings of your phone.
Go to "Settings" then type "Autofill" in the search bar of the settings of your phone and then select "Privowny App".
A "long press" may be needed
For most of the websites/apps, tapping in the field automatically opens the Privowny Autofill feature and shows a menu with all the available options. However, some developers and handset manufacturers may have chosen not to implement the feature this way and, in this case, you need to:
- Apply a long press in the field
- Tap on the 3 vertical dots or go directly to step 3
- Tap on "Autofill"
- Access the feature
At the time Privowny is releasing v1.32 (November 2020) the following apps are behaving this way: Spotify, Airbnb, Twitch, Vova, Twitter, Facebook Lite, the New York Times.
Note that this list is not complete and that some of the apps mentioned above may behave differently in the future. Additionally, for some of these apps, the "long press" may only be needed for one field (password or email) and not for both.
Your phone may require an additional permission
Android phones are very diverse and some manufacturers require an extra permission for the "Autofill" feature to work. It is rare and even if this will most likely be fixed soon (since it is not really needed as it is covered by the broader "Autofill" permission) you may be confronted with this situation on some Xiaomi and Oppo phones for example. This extra permission may be called "Display pop-up windows while running in the background", however, it may have another name and be difficult to locate.
Since this is a case by case issue and changes rapidly, please contact our support team at customer-support@privowny.com and we will make sure to guide you through the process for whatever device you own.
If the problem is on Chrome, you may need to reboot your phone
There is currently a bug in the Chrome browser that is blocking the "Autofill" to appear on login/registration pages. Therefore, after installing Privowny App v1.32, you may need to reboot your device (i.e. shut it completely off and start it again) for Chrome to display the feature.
Some apps don't allow the feature
Some app developers make a choice not to allow the Autofill feature for their product. In this case, the feature being purposefully disabled, there is nothing that can be done but applying the tip below.
As a general workaround, remember that it is always possible to open Privowny App, create an account in the Password Manager and copy and paste the newly created credentials in the appropriate fields!
