Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- The creation of the Master Key has been integrated inside the browser extension's Main Window. That way, users are ready to start using the product as soon as this last step of the registration process is completed. The user interface has been completely reviewed and enhanced for a better user experience.
Bug fixes
- Multiple minor bug fixes
Android app
Multiple minor user interface improvements and bug fixes.
iOS app
Notable changes
- "My Digital Footprint" chart on the Dashboard has been improved. Users can now choose the period of time for which they want to see the data. This is more consistent with the chart displayed in the browser extension.
- The alias view has been improved so all the available actions for a given alias are now easier to find. An ellipsis has replaced the "expand" icon and lists multiple actions. Blocking and allowing senders still works as before.
- Multiple minor user interface improvements.

Known issue
- The Privowny Autofill feature has some limitations for retrieving credentials. This is fixed with the use of iOS 13.
What’s new in v1.35.0 (release date: March 1st 2021)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Users can now choose to keep their Master Key in memory up to 10 hours when they configure their Security preferences in the Settings.
- Credentials generated for a private & secure account (i.e., an alias as User ID and a strong password) were previously saved in the Password Manager only when an account was actually registered on a website. This is no longer the case and they are now always saved for more convenience.
- Users will no longer be asked for their Master Key when retrieving only the User ID for an account (i.e., in a “Reset password” form or in a 2-step login form) as it is not needed for decryption purposes then.
- Multiple minor user interface improvements, including a fresh new look for the Smartfield Icon menu.
Bug fixes
- An effort has been made to make sure that the Smartfield Icon no longer overlaps with existing Show/Hide icons in fields on websites such as netflix.com.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- Users can now export their data directly on their Android device. Indeed, accessing My Account through the app will now open the page in the device’s main browser, giving users access to the “Export data” tab. Learn more about how to export your data
Notable bug fixes
- Several bug fixes and app stability improvements, particularly in the Data Manager.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
iOS app
Notable changes
- Users can now export their data directly on their iOS device. Indeed, users will now find an Export section in their app’s Settings, from which they can export a CSV file to save a copy of their data on their device. Learn more about how to export your data
- If a user has multiple accounts for a given app or website, the most frequently used accounts will be shown first when using Privowny Autofill to retrieve credentials.
- The behavior when encrypting data from a session in the Data Manager has been changed. Previously, the data would be encrypted but remained visible to the user at the time of the action, creating confusion. Now, users will immediately see that their data is encrypted and will have to temporarily decrypt it (“show”) to see it in the clear.
- Multiple minor user interface improvements.

What’s new in v1.34.0 (release date: January 27th 2021)
NEW FEATURE: Reply to emails sent to your aliases anonymously!
Generating alias email addresses allows users to provide addresses they have complete power over to senders that they feel could be ill-intentioned or intrusive. But some communication from these senders may actually be important to them and they may even need at some point to reply to them and start a conversation. Starting with v1.34 this is now possible and any reply to an email sent to one of the users' aliases will show the alias as the sender in the recipient’s email header and will not mention the user's private email address at all. Learn more...
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Users can set a time to lock their Main Window in order to make sure the data in their managers is not in plain sight should they leave their station. This has been developed in earlier versions but the countdown for the timer was not visible enough and the Main Window was often locking unexpectedly so the countdown timer has moved to the center of the Main Window and the background fades out progressively to catch the user’s attention.
- The Dashboard was previously available by clicking on Privowny App's logo. It now has its dedicated icon:
.
- The icons to generate aliases and passwords were simplified in the Managers (a simple "+" sign is replacing the @ and key icons at the end of the fields).
Bug fixes
- A major effort has been made to improve the way Privowny App saves credentials after they are entered in fields on online forms. Issues with unsaved credentials that were discovered on websites such as datazapp.com have been resolved.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- Only one VPN can be active at a time, so, when Privowny App detects that another VPN is already installed, users are notified that they need to uninstall it, in order to use Privowny App's Tracker Manager. Additionally, should a VPN be installed after Privowny App's, users are notified that Privowny App's VPN is then disabled and should be turned on again for the Tracker Manager to start working again.
- An "Expand" icon has been added in the Alias Manager. In the alias preview screen, next to the alias email address, there is now an icon with 2 arrows
. Tap on it to expand the view and display the alias email address in full screen. Aliases are often complex to spell out and this allows users to share a freshly generated alias with a store clerk, for example, in order to set up a customer account: the alias is shown in bigger characters and the rest of the preview screen is hidden.

iOS app
Notable changes
- Say hello to the Tracker Manager on iOS! Privowny App's Browser Extension and Android app both already include a Tracker Manager. It is now also available for iOS. The technical limitations are different depending on the devices and operating systems, so, on Apple devices, the Tracker Manager is only able to block advertising trackers and only while browsing on Safari. The option is available from the Settings of the app: one toggle to switch and the user's browsing experience is significantly enhanced.
- An "Expand" icon has been added in the Alias Manager. In the alias preview screen, next to the alias email address, there is now an icon with 2 arrows
. Tap on it to expand the view and display the alias email address in full screen. What’s new in v1.33.0 (release date: January 2021)
OPT-OUT OF ONBOARDING EMAILS: These emails are meant to get users started by introducing the Privowny App Managers one at a time. There are only 6 of them but, if users decide that it is already too much, then they can opt-out by going to the menu item "Preferences" in the "My Account" interface.
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
- Deleting an alias email address altogether is a dangerous endeavour since aliases are sometimes used as User IDs (which is a great practice to protect your accounts and your inbox, but it also means that, without these aliases, any communication relative to these accounts can't reach you). This is why the "Delete" option has been removed from the Alias Manager, and an "Archive" feature has been added. The "Archive" feature answers the same need, but with an easy recovery option. Because of this new security measure, users will see in their new "Archive folder" all the aliases that they may have "deleted" while using previous versions of the product. They are still deactivated (all the senders are blocked), but it is now possible to restore the original means of communication with the service provider if needed.
- Passwords generated by Privowny App's password generator are now 12-character long by default (instead of 10).
- Whenever a session expires, a banner now appears on top of whatever webpage the user is on to let him know that he is no longer logged in and encourage him to reconnect.
Bug fixes
- The Smartfield Icon now displays accounts sorted in a way that the most used ones are on top.
- There was an issue with editing manually added data. It is now fixed.
- Tooltips in the Tracker Panel have been fixed.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.

iOS app
Notable changes
- iOS 14's little widgets are here so Privowny App is taking advantage of the convenient little shortcut to let you position it on your favorite home screen. Unfortunately, the new widgets don't have the same power as the old ones and cannot perform actions, so keep the old one handy to create aliases on the go and add this new one as a shortcut to the Alias Manager where you need it most.

What’s new in v1.32.0
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox) - release date: November 25th 2020
Bug fixes
- The "contact form" used to send direct messages to Privowny App's support team was not fully accessible to people with disabilities. Keyboard navigation has been improved and the form is now fully accessible.
- The "Data distribution" graph in the Dashboard was misleading. Some text has been modified to make it clearer that the data shown is only a subset of data considered sensitive (passwords, credit cards numbers, etc.). If there are no data shown in the graph, it doesn't mean that no data are present in the Data Manager, only that none of these sensitive data are kept in there at the moment.
- It is now possible to enter long company names or data values in the Managers' fields without them being cropped.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app (release date: November 26th 2020)
Notable change: Say hello to the Privowny Autofill for Android
For everyone using Android Oreo 8.0 and higher, Privowny App is introducing its brand-new Autofill feature with v1.32.
Just tap in a field on a login form to autofill your credentials saved in your Password or Alias Manager. (Some apps may require a long press in the field instead, but it’s really as simple as that!)
You want to create a new account and generate an alias and/or a strong password directly from the field as well? Same process: tap in the field (or long press if needed) and choose the right option in the menu.
The Privowny Autofill delivers the same results but is more intuitive and easier to use than the Smartfield Icon.
For the Privowny Autofill to work properly it needs to be enabled in the settings of your phone (the app will guide you to achieve this). It also means that Privowny App doesn't need the "accessibility" permission anymore, which is a great improvement since we try to be as unintrusive as possible. It is important to us to only require from our users access what we expressly need for the product to work and nothing more.
Note that if you are using Android Oreo 8.0 and higher, the Smartfield Icon will actually no longer appear with this new version. If you haven’t upgraded your phone’s OS yet though, then don’t worry, the Smartfield Icon is still provided if that is all that is available to you; but we certainly recommend that you upgrade soon and try the improved user experience we designed for you.
One caveat: Chrome does have a bug on their side and you may need to reboot your device (i.e. shut it completely off and turn it on again) for the Autofill to work properly on this browser. Let’s hope they find a fix soon.
Notable bug fixes
- The stability of the application has been greatly improved. Crashes were sometimes reported when trying to open the Settings, adding accounts from the Dashboard, using the "search" feature, or viewing a saved account. These have been fixed.
- The link to the beta community was broken and has been fixed.
- The Smartfield Icon was sometimes missing even though it should have been displayed. Fixed.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
iOS app (release date: November 18th 2020)
Notable bug fixes
- The stability of the application has been improved. For example, users are now more often prompted to "retry" instead of simply being logged out of the app when an error occurs during the authentication process.
- Quick actions from the home screen were not behaving properly when the app was closed.
- Registering a new account with the Autofill would sometimes fail (the email address would not be filled automatically as it should for example).
- The process to reset ones Master Key and then try to decrypt an account was showing an inappropriate error message instead of just removing the indecipherable password.
Known issues
- The Privowny Autofill feature has some limitations for retrieving credentials. This is fixed with the use of iOS 13.
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
What’s new in v1.31.0
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Users can now modify data entered manually in the Data Manager. Collected data are still read-only.
Bug fixes
- The Privowny App extension installed on Firefox was sometimes causing the browser to slow down and would trigger a yellow banner informing users of the situation. This has been fixed and the extension is no longer impacting Firefox's performance.
- The charts on the dashboard were sometimes wrongly identifying that data collection was off when it was actually activated.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.

What’s new in v1.30.0 (release date: September 24th 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Chrome has changed the way it shows extensions in the navigation bar: a puzzle piece is now representing extensions and, clicking on it allows users to pin their browser extensions in the bar. Without using this option, the Privowny App shortcut may not be visible, so we designed an explanation screen to explain the new behavior and allow users to find their Privowny App extension easily, in one click.
- The "Do you want to save the credentials you just entered?" notification is now displayed right after generating a password on a web registration form.
- The "Contact us" form has seen some improvements for a better user experience.

What’s new in v1.29.0 (release date: August 25th 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Some of the preferences users specify in the Settings are now persistent even when users use a different browser or computer. They are no longer saved locally for each browser, but rather at an account level. These preferences are about: remembering the Master Key, locking the main window and whether or not to see a notification when an alias is created.
- Minor user interface improvements.

- Multiple user interface improvements have been implemented, including improving responsiveness, with a sleeker, cleaner look when the Main Window is resized to a smaller size.
- The AI algorithm has been updated. We continuously improve how we identify the nature of a field on a form to ensure the options offered by the Smartfield Icon are as relevant as possible.
Notable bug fix
- On certain websites, the notification prompting users to save their credentials would appear twice. This has been resolved.

What’s new in v1.26.0 (release date: July 1st 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Improvements have been made to the Alias Manager in order to be more self-explanatory and intuitive. Drop-down menus have replaced some of the toggles and the user’s primary email address is mentioned below the header to make it clearer that all emails sent to the user’s aliases are forwarded to this particular inbox.
- The option to let your browser remember your Master Key for a set amount of time has been refined in order to offer comfort, security and a more user-friendly process. Learn more about how this feature works
- A card has been added to the “Getting started” section to explain how the Master Key works when it is used as an extra security level of authentication (in addition to being the only key able to decrypt the users’ data).
- It is now possible to exclude companies for data collection individually from the Data Manager (it was possible to do it from the Toolbar before, but only when visiting the said website).
- It is now possible to better see which data were entered manually and which ones were automatically added to the Data Manager through the data collection feature. Data can now be easily sorted this way thanks to 2 new buttons in the header of the Manager.
- The Toolbar doesn’t allow users to block or allow trackers on all websites anymore. It stays in its contextual role and only applies to the visited website (this feature is still available from the Tracker Panel though).
- Better communication has been put in place in order to let the users know when they have been disconnected unexpectedly. A question mark is added to the browser extension’s icon (in the navigation bar) and notifications are sent every 24 hours.
- A message was added within the Main Window to inform the users when the internet connection is lost.
Notable bug fixes
- Users were sometimes experiencing problems with the data collection because of connection issues on Firefox. It has been resolved.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.

Bug fixes
- Multiple minor bug fixes
Known issues
- The Tracker Filter doesn’t work with the Chrome browser. This is a limitation orchestrated by Chrome for which we currently have no workaround.
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.

- A widget able to generate an alias email address on the go was added to the spotlight screen in v1.23. In v1.26 extra efforts have been put into explaining where to find it, how it works and how to set it up. A new “Getting started” card has been added with a tutorial video, as well as an entry in the settings with a setup video and an animation to introduce the feature at the beginning of the new user’s journey. Learn more about the iOS Alias widget
- The Privowny Autofill feature is very user-friendly to log into accounts, but had limitations (due to the OS), which made it unreliable to use to register new accounts. A workaround had been found in v1.22, and, due to its popularity and ease-of-use, we decided to add a tutorial video to bring attention to it. Additionally, the setup of the Safari Extension has been removed for users using iOS>12 since it had then become redundant.
Bug fixes
- The app would sometimes crash when users were trying to use the search feature in the Data Manager. It has been resolved.
Known issues
- The Privowny Autofill feature has some limitations for retrieving credentials. This is fixed with the use of iOS 13.

This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
iOS app
Notable changes
- Users have had the possibility to link their Master Key to their Face ID or Touch ID since v1.11, but they may have not taken that opportunity. With multiple prompts to guide users to do so, it is now easier to make the switch.
- Improvements were made in the “Getting started” section. When an explanatory video is available, the button taking users out of Privowny App to try for themselves has been removed to avoid confusion.

What’s new in v1.24.0 (release date: May 5th 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- In ongoing efforts to improve the accessibility of all Privowny App features, the Managers’ headers have been reimagined in order to improve color contrast and readability for all (no more color coding). A few more versions will be needed to call the app accessible to the standard that we wish to achieve, but several improvements have been made in v1.24, and we are committed to becoming even better.
- Improvements were made in the “Getting started” section. When an explanatory video is available, the button taking users out of Privowny App to try for themselves has been removed to avoid confusion.
Notable bug fixes
- The “Remember Master Key” checkbox when the screen is locked is now accessible using keyboard navigation.
- When revoking consent for “My Digital Footprint” on the Dashboard, users previously encountered an unexpected delay. This is now fixed.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- It is now possible for users to import their passwords from Chrome to Privowny App, directly from their Android device. The steps to follow have been added in the “Getting started” section.
- Users can now save credentials for an account after logging in or registering if they forgot to use the Smartfield Icon to do so. A message appears at the bottom of the screen asking them if they wish to add the account to their Password Manager.

- The widget able to generate an alias email address on the go was added to the spotlight screen in v1.23. It is now possible to edit the generated address directly from the spotlight screen as well: it is no longer necessary to open the app to rename it. (A long press on the Privowny App icon on the Home screen provides the same possibility as well)

Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- A comprehensive Settings page has been designed and opens in the Main Window whenever users click on the gear icon. It includes security and notification preferences, access to the user’s profile page (“My account”), explanations about how to find help in the product and more.
- In order to streamline the data collection process in the Data Manager, it is now limited to 12 types of data. If the fields in which users are entering their data don’t match these pre-identified types, then collection does not happen.
- The possibility to alert users in case of important issues with push notifications has been implemented. Users will be asked to allow these notifications the first time they open My Account on their desktop browser. Those who accept can now be notified of serious security issues (such as when a login on a new device is detected, an update is required, a security breach has occurred, etc.) as well as major changes. Users can manage their preferences by clicking on the bell on My Account.
- Close captions (only in English for now) have been added to all the videos.
Notable bug fixes
- Because of limitations due to the Firefox browser, the main window cannot open the locked screen (screen requiring the Master Key) when the computer recovers from sleep mode. Therefore the option has been removed from the settings (for the Firefox Add-on only).
- On some websites (including google.com) some data were collected twice. It has been fixed.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- The graph “My Digital Footprint” is back. Based on the webpages users visit on their computer (if they are using the Privowny App browser extension in addition to our Android app), it gives a quick view of their interests as they appear in the digital world. This needs to be enabled from your Privowny App browser extension and users may revoke their consent at any time in the graph’s menu there.
- Privowny is still hard at work to improve the accessibility of all its features (colors, buttons, navigation, Talk-back help, etc. are all being checked). A few more versions will be needed to call the app accessible to the standard that we wish to achieve, but more improvements have been made in v1.23 and we are committed to becoming even better.
- On Privowny’s iOS app, a widget able to generate an alias email address on the go has been added to the spotlight screen (this feature is not available for Android devices). Aliases generated this way on iOS are, by default, named “Widget” in the Alias Manager. Users can edit them on their Android devices though, unlike aliases generated any other way.
Notable bug fixes
- Multiple minor bug fixes
Known issues
- The Tracker Filter doesn’t work with the Chrome browser. This is a limitation orchestrated by Chrome for which we currently have no workaround.
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
iOS app
Notable changes
- A widget able to generate an alias email address on the go has been added to the spotlight screen. It is faster than opening the app and generating an alias from the Alias Manager: one swipe and one tap and it’s done! (More about how this works.) It is especially convenient when an email address is requested in a store for a membership card, for example. No need to give a real email address in this situation since they will most probably share it with third parties and use it to send unwanted ads. As always with Privowny App’s aliases, all the emails sent to this address will be rerouted to the users’ usual inbox who will then be able to manage the senders (and block them if necessary) from their Alias Manager.
- The graph “My Digital Footprint” is back. Based on the webpages users visit on their computer (if they are using the Privowny App browser extension in addition to our iOS app), it gives a quick view of their interests as they appear in the digital world. This needs to be enabled from the Privowny App browser extension and users may revoke your consent at any time in the graph’s menu there.
- Privowny is still hard at work to improve the accessibility of all its features (colors, buttons, navigation, voice-over help, etc. are all being checked). A few more versions will be needed to call the app accessible to the standard that we wish to achieve, but more improvements have been made in v1.23 and we are committed to becoming even better.
Notable bug fixes
- Multiple minor bug fixes
Known issues
- The Privowny Autofill feature has some limitations for retrieving credentials. This is fixed with the use of iOS 13.

What’s new in v1.22.0 (release date: March 19th 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- With Privowny’s default settings and depending on the usage of the product, users may need to enter their Master Key every few minutes. That’s why, when unlocking the Main Window, there is now an option to allow the browser to remember the Master Key until the next locked screen. Users can configure their Security preferences in the Settings of the product and choose when the Main Window is locked, closing the ongoing session and erasing the Master Key from memory. More about how this works.
Notable bug fixes
- When the internet connection was lost, Privowny’s browser extension was not automatically reconnecting and an error message was appearing instead. Now, the extension detects the loss of connection and reconnects automatically when the connection is restored.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- Privowny is working hard on improving the accessibility of all its features (colors, buttons, navigation, TalkBack help, etc. are all being checked). A few more versions will be needed to call the app accessible to the standard that we wish to achieve, but improvements can already be seen in v1.22 and we are committed to becoming even better.
- Close captions (only in English for now) have been added to all our videos.
Notable bug fixes
- In some cases the Smartfield Icon was finding its way in apps where it didn’t belong and was not adding value (like SMS or calendar). It has been removed from these apps.
- The Privowny Autofill feature is very user-friendly to log into accounts but it has limitations (due to the OS) which make it difficult to use to register new accounts. A workaround has been found to help users create new accounts in the app and autofill the app/website forms. It implies copying the password to the clipboard and pasting it, which is explained in the new flow. Try it out next time you need to register a new account! Tap on the key on top of the keyboard and follow the instructions.
- Privowny is working hard on improving the accessibility of all its features (colors, buttons, navigation, VoiceOver help, etc. are all being checked). A few more versions will be needed to call the app accessible to the standard that we wish to achieve, but improvements can already be seen in v1.22 and we are committed to becoming even better.
- Close captions (only in English for now) have been added to all our videos.
Notable bug fixes
- After editing a piece of data in the Data Manager, the data shown was still the previous unedited one, even though it had been changed. This was confusing for the users. It has been fixed to display the actual, updated data right away.
What’s new in v1.21.0 (release date: February 18th 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- In some cases the Smartfield Icon was finding its way inside inappropriate fields such as a “search” or “comment” fields. It is now only displayed in fields where it serves a purpose such as “password” and “user ID” fields. This way it stays non-intrusive, but is available whenever users need to generate credentials or retrieve the ones already stored in their Managers.
- A link to the section “Reset Master Key” in the user’s My Account page has been added to the pop-up window that requests it, in case users get stuck and don’t remember their Master Key. However, by design and for security reasons, resetting one’s Master Key renders all the data previously encrypted with it unreadable. It does allow the user to restart and keep on using the product, though.
Notable bug fixes
- Credentials were sometimes not saved when creating an account on facebook.com.
- On batchgeo.com, the Smartfield Icon did not offer to retrieve an alias email address, even though it had been generated and was saved in the Alias Manager.
- Multiple issues with creating and retrieving credentials on lemonde.fr have been fixed.
- The “search by data” feature in the Data Manager has been fixed.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- Quick actions are now available directly from the Home screen of the device. It is now possible to add an account in the Password Manager or a piece of data in the Data Manager and to generate an alias email address, all without opening the app. To access this shortcut, find the Privowny App icon on your Home screen and apply a “long press” to make the drop-down menu with the list of quick actions appear.
- Data collection is only available from our browser extension (i.e., on desktops) and users can choose to disable the feature from there. Messages have been added on mobile to inform users of the feature’s status in order to make sense of the Dashboard’s graphs that need collection to be ON to display relevant information.
- A “sort by” functionality has been added to the Password and Alias Managers.
- An appropriate error message is now displayed when users try to create a duplicate account. They then have the option to be redirected to their Password Manager to check (and edit if needed) the account that already exists for the said company with the same User ID.
- When an Android application is moved to the background, the device’s operating system takes a screenshot of the application in order to display it in the “application overview” menu. If the user is accessing sensitive data at that precise moment, it threatens the security of this data. To avoid this, Privowny has found a workaround to ensure no sensitive data is displayed at this time.

Messages have been added on mobile to inform users of the feature’s status in order to make sense of the Dashboard’s graphs that need collection to be ON to display relevant information.
- The Managers’ user interface has changed and displays a lighter, narrower header to give room to more content.
Notable bug fixes
- Pulling the screen down to refresh the data in the Managers was experiencing glitches. It has been successfully fixed.
What’s new in v1.20.0 (release date: January 20th 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- It is now possible to generate an alias email address AND a strong password with a single click from the Smartfield Icon. The Smartfield Icon offers a new “Generate strong and private credentials” option that allows users to create strong and anonymized accounts on their behalf quickly and stores them in their Managers for future login needs.
- Deleting an alias email address is a dangerous practice since the address can be used as a User ID for an account. In that case, its deletion makes it impossible for the service to contact the user for information that may be important about their account. Because of this, a message is now displayed for these specific cases to warn users about possible unintended consequences.
- All the toggles/switches have been reviewed to make sure they behave with the same logic. Toggles are green when the feature is activated and gray when the feature is deactivated. In the Tracker Manager, green means the trackers are blocked (since this is the feature Privowny App offers—it is also the default setting). In the Alias Manager, green means the alias email address is accepting emails. Additionally, in the Alias Manager, an intermediate orange state lets users know when aliases are either blocking emails with some senders allowed or accepting emails, but with some senders blocked.
- Our product website priwony.app now includes a button with a drop-down menu in the footer to easily switch between our French and English versions.
Notable bug fixes
- Neither the Smartfield Icon nor the Toolbar were working correctly on Achitectural Designs. Generating alias email addresses and retrieving them was failing. It has been fixed.
- The Smartfield Icon was missing on sugarpill.com
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- The Master Key (or biometric authentication, if enabled) used to be asked each time users needed to perform a sensitive action. This is still the default setting, but it is now up to the users to decide the level of security (vs. convenience) they prefer. Users who prefer not to be asked each time have the option to request the security check only when they launch the app. Users who want to be extra secure can opt for both and be asked to enter it for every sensitive action AND each time they launch the app. Configuring these preferences is available from the Security section of the app’s Settings.
- The toggles/switches of the Alias Manager have been reviewed to make sure they behave with the same logic as the ones in the Browser Extension. Toggles are green when the feature is activated and gray when the feature is deactivated. Consequently, in the Alias Manager, green means the alias email address is accepting all emails and gray means that all senders are blocked. An intermediate orange state lets users know when aliases are either blocking emails with some senders allowed or accepting emails, but with some senders blocked.
- Deleting an alias email address is a dangerous practice since the address can be used as a User ID for an account. In that case, its deletion makes it impossible for the service to contact the user for information that may be important about their account. Because of this, a message is now displayed for these specific cases to warn users about possible unintended consequences.
- A new card in the “Getting started” section helps mobile users install the app on their desktop. The card explains the process and users can request a link to be sent to their inbox. By clicking on the link from their computer, they are directed to a download page where they can easily install the Browser Extension on either Chrome or Firefox and enjoy the same features and more!
- The order of the Managers is now consistent with the one used in the Browser Extension: first the Password Manager, then the Alias Manager followed by the Tracker Manager and, lastly, the Data Manager.
- Our product website priwony.app now includes a button with a drop-down menu in the footer to easily switch between our French and English versions.
Notable bug fixes
- When aliases were receiving emails from unknown senders the app would crash.
- The list of trackers detected and blocked was not refreshed appropriately in the Tracker Manager after browsing with Firefox.

Because of this, a message is now displayed for these specific cases to warn users about possible unintended consequences.
- It is now possible to sort the alias email addresses by date of creation in the Alias Manager.
- When users try to create an account for a company with the same User ID as an existing account for that same company, they are warned that the account already exists and taken to the said account in case they want to make edits.
- Our product website priwony.app now includes a button with a drop-down menu in the footer to easily switch between our French and English versions.
Notable bug fixes
- After resetting the Master Key, trying to decrypt data was making the app crash.
- Some of the tooltips in the tutorials in the “Getting started” section would either take too long to load or not disappear fast enough.
What’s new in v1.19.0 (release date: January 2nd 2020)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- The way the Alias Manager displays its information has been improved for better usability. Each alias now has a dedicated line. Users can see them all at a glance and don’t need to expand a company line to find the alias they are looking for. Additionally, for each alias, information about its creation date, the date when it was last modified and how many emails it received, as well as the toggle that enables users to block/allow senders, is displayed at the opening of the Manager. It makes it easier for users to sort, find, and act on the alias they are looking for. Hassle-free.
- Some of the graphs in the Dashboard need data collection to be activated in order to display up-to-date information. So, for these graphs an informational screen placed on top on the graph now informs the users in case data collection is OFF.
- Several popup screens confirming noncritical actions have been removed for a smoother experience.
- The order of the Managers is now consistent everywhere in the product (in the Main menu, the Main window and the Toolbar): first the Password Manager, then the Alias Manager followed by the Tracker Manager and, lastly, the Data Manager.
Notable bug fixes
- Multiple minor bug fixes and user interface improvements.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.

What’s new in v1.18.0 (release date: December 2nd 2019)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Data collection in ON by default on all the websites users visit, but in v1.18, users can choose to turn it OFF by the switch of a toggle in the Data Manager’s header. So far, this option was only offered on a site-by-site basis (from the Toolbar). This new toggle puts more power in the users’ hands and lets them wait until they are fully comfortable with this powerful feature to (re-)switch the option ON. For more about the value of this feature please read our article What is the Data Manager and why should I use it?.
- Users now enjoy a different welcome experience if they registered on their mobile device first or if they are discovering Privowny App on their computer. This makes it possible to better explain the differences between the 2 products when appropriate for the user.
- The Smartfield Icon’s visibility has been greatly improved. It is still discreet, but is less opaque and is now shown when the focus is on the input field as well as directly on top of the icon.
- The possibility to sort by Company has been added in the Data Manager (it was already available in the other Managers).
- The “contact us” form is now accessible from the first drop-down menu list in the Settings. This way, users don’t have to go and dig for it further in the arborescence of the menu and can reach the support team easily.
Notable bug fixes
- The input fields in online forms that are meant for long text (like comments or chats for example) are now automatically excluded from data collection. This kind of data is often not relevant for archiving or worthy of being encrypted or autofilled at any point and it can be very lengthy. It didn’t bring a lot of user value and risked burdening the Data Manager with a lot of useless data.
- The button to validate the creation of the Master Key was sometimes unreachable since it would be at the bottom of a screen with no scrolling option. This is now fixed.
- In some cases the Main Window would fail to open after clicking on the “OI” icon in the navigation bar or it would open and close right away. It has been fixed.
- The Smartfield Icon failed to recognize the email field on Rainforestqa.com.
- The Smartfield Icon in the email field on Eventbrite.com was not responding.
- On groupon.com the Smartfield Icon was confusing the field “Current Password” with the field “New Password”.
Known issue
- expedia.com has a bug that blocks the creation of an account with an alias email address on some devices. This is not linked to the validity of the alias though, and you can use the same alias to create an account from a different device.
Android app
Notable changes
- Privowny App detects better the exact nature of input fields (AI improvements). Users are now offered more appropriate options for their login or register needs.
- Users now enjoy different welcome experiences if they registered on their computer first or if they are discovering Privowny App on their Android device. This makes it possible to better explain the differences between the 2 products when appropriate for the user.
Notable bug fixes
- The Smartfield Icon would sometimes be accessible, but when tapped on would inform users that they weren’t logged in even if they actually were. This has been fixed and the app now detects that the user is logged in as expected.
- The Smartfield Icon was not retrieving usernames on the Twitter app. Now fixed.
- Users are now offered the options to opt in or out of receiving important notifications when the app is launched for the second time. They are also given the opportunity to retry or change their minds from the Settings of the app.
- Users now enjoy different welcome experiences if they registered on their computer first or if they are discovering Privowny App on their iPhone or iPad. This makes it possible to better explain the differences between the 2 products when appropriate for the user.
Notable bug fixes
- Issues with Privowny Autofill when filling a password field have been resolved thanks to an upgrade of our AI algorithm.
- Users trying to sort by “last modified date” in the Password Manager were sometimes having issues. This is now fixed.
- Refreshing the Dashboard was sometimes resulting in a duplicate and overlapping of some graphs. Now fixed.
- Some UI issues have been fixed on iPad.
What’s new in v1.17.0 (release date: November 18th 2019)
Browser Extension (available for Chrome and Firefox)
Notable changes
- Confirmation popups and error messages are now being displayed inside the Main Window. The text overlay appears over the window which turns gray to let users know that a message needs their attention.
- More tooltips have been added in the Managers in order to explain what some of the icons do in a more accessible, user-friendly manner.
Notable bug fixes
- On login forms it was impossible to generate a password from the Toolbar or the Main Window if an alias email address had already been generated for the username field. This is now fixed.
- A few problems with the Twitter website had been reported and are now fixed: generating passwords for new Twitter accounts wasn’t always working as expected and retrieving credentials from the Smartfield Icon would sometimes fail.
- Users were unable to retrieve their credentials from the Smartfield Icon on klgates.com and remarkable.com. They were also experiencing similar but milder issues with urbanoutfitters.com. It is now working properly.
- The graph “Trackers Control” in the Dashboard has been improved so it is easier to read and understand: the colors displayed are more consistent with the legend.
Known issues we are working on
- Our Browser Extension stops working when on the “Password Required” window on https://www.pandora.com/settings/info. We are investigating a solution.
